5 Simple Ways to Go Green While Aging in Place

aging_in_place_go_greenMore and more older adults are choosing to stay in their homes longer but just because they aren’t changing their addresses, it doesn’t mean they can’t change their carbon footprint.  Contrary to popular belief, you can make the effort to “go green” without completely overhauling your life. Small changes can make a big difference.

Aging in place gives you the opportunity to have a positive impact on your  home turf. So, if you’re interested in living a life that’s kinder to the environment, you’ve come to the right place. We’ve compiled a list of five simple ways to go green and add a little sustainability to your daily life.

1. Reduce Your Energy Consumption

Not only is using less energy better for the environment, but it can also help lower your utility bills. Start small by making an effort to turn off lights when you leave a room. Build on replacing your old light bulbs with a more energy efficient model. Set the air conditioning a few degrees warmer in the summer and turn the heat down a bit in the winter. These changes might seem insignificant but they can make a big impact over time.

2. Use Less Water

Water is an extremely valuable resource that is often wasted unnecessarily. Work to eliminate your wasteful water habits. This includes not running the faucet as long when you brush your teeth or taking long showers.

3. Eat Better

Improving your diet can work wonders for your health, but it also has hidden environmental benefits. Think of it this way: most of the healthiest food you buy doesn’t come in any packaging. Eating more fruits and vegetables creates less trash while also being better for your body.

4. Shop Local

The shorter distance goods have to travel to reach their consumer, the better. Buying local food and products reduces the amount of pollution that would have been put into the air had your goods arrived on a truck. Plus, shopping at farmer’s markets and local shops can be a great way to fit some exercise and movement into your day.

5. Recycle Old Electronics

If you have a cell phone that no longer works or an old computer you need to get rid of, don’t throw them in the trash. The mercury and toxins your electronics contains isn’t good for the environment, so look into options in your area for donating or recycling.

As you can see, most of these habits won’t affect how you live your day-to-day life. You don’t have to set up a compost pit or trade your car in for a hybrid to live a greener life. Instead, consider making small choices that add up over time to a healthier and happier you, not to mention creating a cleaner environment to live in.
