A Look at Kendal’s Values in Practice: Serving

Posted by Lynne Giacobbe on April 7, 2014 at 9:00 AM

kno-quaker-values-serviceThe name of an organization is a window to its core beliefs, and Kendal Northern Ohio’s name is tied to one of its guiding principles: service. The name pays tribute to an English town important in Quaker history and honors the seventeenth-century Kendal Fund, which provided philanthropic support to early Friends who traveled in the ministry.

For Kendal Northern Ohio, service means:

Continued Learning

We seek to grow as a community through shared experiences. Kendal Northern Ohio facilitates classes, speakers and learning opportunities as often as possible. We work in cooperation with surrounding community organizations to arrange opportunities for involvement and interaction. Instead of hiring activity directors, we empower community members by encouraging them to direct libraries, interest groups, and activities.

Celebrating Diversity

True service is based on a spirit of inclusion. Kendal strives to create and support an environment for community members, board, staff, and volunteers that is welcoming to all cultures, backgrounds, and religious beliefs. Rather than ignoring differences, we celebrate them through dialogue and social activities.

Caring for Physical Health

Kendal seeks to be wellness-oriented throughout its communities, whether campus or home-based—that includes Kendal at Oberlin, Kendal at Home and Senior Independence. In addition to quality health care, Kendal Northern Ohio offers wellness programs that seek to treat the whole person, rather than addressing only pressing problems.

Environmental Stewardship

We recognize that our influence reaches far behind the walls of our programs. We make every effort to use sustainable practices in line with the Quaker philosophy to “tread ever more lightly upon the Earth.” We consult environmental experts when planning new construction, and we use utility systems that conserve energy as much as possible.

Service is not only tied to our name; it’s at the heart of everything we do. We strive for continuous improvement, recognizing that our work to preserve human dignity through the aging process will never be finished.
