In partnership with Lakeside Chautauqua, Kendal Northern Ohio will sponsor the 9th Annual Civil War Week this month. Join the fun August 20 to 24. Take part in riveting seminars, including Life in a Civil War Prison, Wednesday Walking Tour of Historic Central Lakeside, Financing the Civil War, and Bard of the Battlefield: The Civil War as Seen from the Eyes of Poet Walt Whitman. Special events include:
- Dinner with President Lincoln: Dine with President Abraham Lincoln (portrayed by James Getty) and enjoy after-dinner entertainment.
- Civil War Artifact Exhibit: An exhibit of Civil War artifacts from multiple enthusiasts will be on display in Hoover Auditorium.
- Tour of Johnson’s Island Prison Site: Dr. David Bush leads a special tour of the Johnson’s Island Prison archeological site.
- Magpie: “Battle Cry of Freedom”: This musical duo performs selections from the Civil War era that go beyond the story of the war by telling personal stories of the people involved.
Perhaps one of the most fascinating exhibits for Ohio natives will be Ohio & the Civil War: 150 Years Later. This traveling panel will explore Ohio’s participation in the war and focuses on individuals’ choices that impacted local communities over the course of the war. The exhibit is sponsored by the Ohio Historical Society, in partnership with the Ohio Humanities Council, and American Electric Power.
Plus, join in the discussion on topics like military strategy and museum collections. Kendal Northern Ohio is also sponsoring a reception with refreshments and plenty of intriguing conversation on Monday, August 20, following the 1:30PM seminar, and on Friday, August 24, following the 10:30AM seminar. With so many opportunities for learning, there is truly something for everyone this week—even if you are not a history buff!
Ladies, there are even events especially for you! Check out Corsets, Crinolines and Cravats: Historic Civil War Fashion, Tuesday Women’s Club Program, and Friday Women’s Club Book Review.
