Want to start the New Year out right? Setting some goals for yourself can be a positive way to improve your health and happiness in 2014. Older adults have a lot to gain from taking care of their physical and emotional well being. Whether this is the year you’re going to run a 5K with your granddaughter or take your grandson on that fishing trip you’ve always talk about, making a plan and setting goals is the first step.
Here we take a look at a few New Year’s resolutions older adults should consider adopting in 2014:
Getting older doesn’t have to mean decreasing stability during everyday activities. Empower yourself this year to learn more about how you can improve your balance and prevent falls. Getting exercise to strengthen your muscles is one strong way to start. Another is getting a fall risk assessment to educate yourself about ways you can prevent falls in and outside of your home. This will make you safer, stronger, and more confident in your surroundings.
Get a Good Night’s Sleep
The foundation to good health is getting a good night’s sleep. Goals like eating right and exercising more can be more difficult when your body is tired. Take an honest assessment of your sleeping habits. Do you have restless nights? Do you feel overly tired during the day? If so, make a resolution to improve your sleep habits.
Fulfill a Dream
Have you always wanted to see the Grand Canyon? Or would you love to learn how to tango? Make 2014 the year you fulfill a lifelong dream. Older adults are often selfless and always worried about what they’re doing for their families and their community. This year, do something for you and make one of your dreams a reality.
Try Some Brain Games
You know what they say: Use it or lose it. When it comes to your health, working out your brain can be just as important as working out your body. You can challenge and exercise your brain in a variety of ways. Get into the habit of doing crossword or Sudoku puzzles, learn to play a musical instrument, or break out that jigsaw puzzle you’ve been meaning to put together. Consistent brain stimulation improves memory and brain function and reduces the risk of cognitive diseases.
