Kendal at Home Gives Older Adults Freedom to Roam

kah-freedom-to-roamThe opportunity for frequent travel is one of the many joys of retirement living. According to US News Money, just less than half (49 percent) of current workers are planning extensive travel in retirement. Another 40 percent of individuals hope to make frequent trips a part of their retirement years.

Retirement travel plans don’t always come to fruition for many older adults, however. Among the reasons why is the concern for getting the proper health care should the need arise. After all, falls and other health issues can happen at any time to anyone.

But spending long periods from home has never been a concern for Kendal at Home Member Mary Lou. A snowbird, Mary Lou, 79, spends roughly half of the year at her second home in Central Florida—a home more than 1,000 miles from Kendal at Home’s office in Westlake, Ohio.

Kendal at Home is a unique program that provides comprehensive services according to a personal plan you help design. Kendal at Home combines the security of a continuing care retirement community with the freedom and independence of living in your home, whether that home is in Northeast Ohio or across the country. It truly is a retirement community without walls…and without boundaries.

“When I thought about spending more time in Florida, Kendal at Home assured me if I needed any care, I would have it in Florida through the program,” Mary Lou says. “And in fact, a couple years ago, I had hurt my knee, so I called my caregiver at Kendal, and I said, ‘I need to go to an orthopedic doctor, and I don’t know who to go to.’ Kendal at Home researched and found someone, and I went, and they were very competent.”

But the Kendal at Home team doesn’t just wait for you to call. Kendal at Home caregivers proactively keep in touch with Members whenever they are away from home, explains Kendal at Home Member Charlotte, 76, who also spends a large portion of the year at her Florida home. “We get a call from our caregiver about once a month while we’re down there to see how things are and make sure everything is going fine with us,” Charlotte says.

“Whatever I have here in Ohio, I also have in Florida,” Mary Lou adds. “I’ve been very pleased with it. Kendal at Home has a lot of people who care about me, and I feel very comfortable with that.”
