Vitalize 360 Helps Kendal at Home Member Stay Fit, Keep Cruising

Posted by Kendal at Home on May 10, 2017 at 8:30 AM

kendal at home vitalize 360There’s nothing Kendal at Home member Norma Maraschin loves more than going on a cruise. Not content to just spend a week at sea, Norma goes on month-long excursions. But after her mother died, she began to notice some changes that could affect her ability to step back onto a cruise ship.

“I would sit down in the afternoon and start reading and would fall into a very deep sleep and I would sleep for hours,” Norma explained. “It hit me one day, ‘This is exactly what happened to mom.’ This is what she did. She would sleep late in the mornings. Get up, have breakfast and coffee, go back to bed and sleep. Get up for lunch, go back to bed and sleep and I go, 'Oh, my God, I am too young for this.'"

It was this realization that spurred Norma to make some changes to ensure she could keep doing the things she loves. Not sure where she should start, she picked up a packet of Vitalize 360 forms she received from her life plan coordinator, Joanne Cornell.

The Vitalize 360 program is a personal coaching program designed to help you live your best life through the pursuit of the goals and activities important to you.

Using Art to Prevent Social Isolation for Those with Dementia

Posted by Kendal at Home on November 12, 2014 at 9:47 AM

Start_ArtIt’s 2 p.m. on a Friday, and the conference room tables in the Kendal at Home office in Westlake, Ohio, are wrapped neatly in newspaper. Volunteers wearing aprons are handing out black and white tablet paper, multicolored pieces of string, paper plates, and miniature paint rollers.

It’s a scene typical of any craft meetup group, but those gathering around the table aren’t your typical meetup group attendees. And by the time this session has ended, they will leave not just with an artistic keepsake, but with a deep sense of community belonging. This is Art Care for Dementia.

Posted by Kendal at Home on October 10, 2014 at 8:00 AM

kendal-at-home-healthy-agingOur most recent Healthy Aging Day was held Friday, September 26 at the Mustard Seed Market & Cafe in Solon, Ohio. The event brought together Kendal at Home members, staff, and partners who spent the day discussing balance and falls prevention.

If you’ve been keeping up with our blog, you know falls represent a serious health risk to older adults. In Ohio, a person 65 or older is injured in a fall every 2 minutes on average, resulting in an emergency room visit every 8 minutes, two hospitalizations per hour, and three deaths per day, according to Steady U, an Ohio Department of Health initiative.

Posted by Kendal at Home on July 23, 2014 at 9:00 AM

kendal-at-home-prevents-senior-isolationYou’re living your retirement to the fullest. Each new day brings a new adventure, whether you’re trying your hand at a new hobby or spending your days volunteering within the community. So when your children suggest choosing to remain in your home could someday lead to you becoming socially isolated, you almost have to suppress a laugh.

But social isolation is no joke. According to the Social Care Institute for Excellence, an estimated 12 percent of those over 65 report feeling isolated. Sure, you’re healthy and active now, but who’s to say that won’t change 5, 10, or 20 years from now? And if it does, will you have a community of friends and advocates to prevent you from becoming socially isolated?
