Residents Run the Show: Coffee Hour at Kendal

Posted by Lynne Giacobbe on August 13, 2012 at 3:12 PM

Coffee Hour Open ForumImagine a retirement community where the residents could question the man (or in our case, woman) in charge. They could simply raise their hand and ask, “Why do you do it this way?” or “When will this be resolved?” Imagine a place where all the hopes and dreams harbored by residents are not only considered, but put into action? A place where concerns are answered and voices are heard.

Meet the Kendal at Home Coordinator Team: Katie Tipton

Posted by Lynne Giacobbe on July 6, 2012 at 10:10 AM

katie tipton 300With a degree in psychology and a Master’s degree in gerontology, Katie Tipton began her career in nursing homes. “It pushed me to realize that I didn’'t want to be in those places any more than the people who lived there,” she said. Katie then moved into non-medical home care. “I provided support and visited people in their homes and that was so special to me.” After a heartbreaking layoff, Katie was hired in 2004 as a sales and marketing associate at Kendal at Home. As membership continued to grow, more help was needed and she quickly became a full-time care coordinator. “This position felt like the right fit for me because of my schooling; however the real experience and authentic learning has come from being around the people.”

Meet the Kendal at Home Care Coordinator Team: Dave Zientarski

Posted by Lynne Giacobbe on July 3, 2012 at 9:54 AM

Dave Zientarski 300After running a nursing home for 11 years, Dave Zientarski, an RN, decided to look for something new. “Nothing surprised me anymore,” he said. At the same time, Lynne Giacobbe, executive director of Kendal at Home, was having a hard time finding a nurse who had geriatric experience. Once the two spoke, Dave was intrigued. “I took care of so many people in the nursing home that it was easy to see who didn’'t need to be there or who could have avoided being in a nursing home altogether,” he said. “To be part of something like Kendal at Home from the ground up sounded like an amazing opportunity.” Dave became the first care coordinator of Kendal at Home in 2004.

Posted by Lynne Giacobbe on July 2, 2012 at 9:45 AM

care coordinators kendalCare coordinators at Kendal at Home coordinate and advocate long term care services for each and every member. We never impose decisions on you, but rather work together to make sure your wishes are followed when care or services are required. A care coordinator may communicate what he or she thinks is best for you, but the final decision is always yours. Maintaining members’ independence is the most important facet of the Kendal at Home program.

Lifelong Learning: Octogenarians Packing in Broadway Crowds

Posted by Lynne Giacobbe on June 22, 2012 at 11:20 AM

older adults are still performing on broadway“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream,” said author C.S. Lewis. That life view was evident at the recent 2012 Tony Awards when 80-year-old director Mike Nichols accepted his eighth Tony for Broadway’s latest incarnation of Arthur Miller’s “Death of a Salesman.” From the director’s chair to the spotlight, octogenarians are packing them in on Broadway. Veterans of stage and screen, some of America’s best-loved actors and actresses are still “beating the boards” when they could be hanging up their dancing shoes.

The Best of Broadway

In a delightful NBC Nightly News segment, reporter Chris Jansing interviewed Broadway stars who are still going strong after half a century on stage. “I can’t quite believe I’m as old as I am because I don’t feel it. I really, really don’t,” confided Angela Lansbury, 86, who is starring with James Earl Jones, 81, in Gore Vidal’s hit play “The Best Man.” Just down the street, fellow octogenarian Joel Grey, 80, who first wowed crowds as the Master of Ceremonies in “Cabaret” 45 years ago, is still singing and dancing in the Broadway revival of “Anything Goes.”

The stars say the challenge of memorizing lines and performing eight shows a week keeps them young but takes discipline and extra sleep. But the standing ovations are still a thrill. As Angela said, “Providing I can put one foot in front of the other, I will continue to act.” And we’ll be in the audience applauding!
