what-is-kendal-northern-ohioWhen you go online to schedule a tour of Kendal at Oberlin or to search for more information about how Kendal at Home’s costs compare to other long-term care services, you’re not directed to their individual websites; you’re directed to Kendal Northern Ohio. Have you ever found yourself wondering, “What is Kendal Northern Ohio anyway?”

Kendal Northern Ohio is an affiliate of the Kendal Corporation, a system of not-for-profit retirement communities, programs, and services founded on the principles of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). Guided by Quaker Values and Practices, Kendal Northern Ohio is committed to ensuring a wide range of choices and lifestyle preferences for older adults in Northeast Ohio and beyond.

Kendal Northern Ohio supports the programs and services provided by Kendal at Oberlin, Kendal at Home, and Senior Independence. We give a brief overview of these programs here:

Kendal at Oberlin

Kendal at Oberlin is a campus-based retirement living community in Oberlin, Ohio, home to Oberlin College and its many amenities, including a world-renowned Conservatory of Music. The community was started by a grassroots-like effort by a handful of individuals in the Oberlin community who felt there was a need for a “world class retirement community in Oberlin.” The first residents moved in October 1993.

Kendal at Oberlin offers both cottages and apartments—many of which are newly renovated—that span over a 107-acre campus with ponds and wetlands, walking trails, and more. It offers a full range of services, starting with independent living and then assisted living and nursing care when needed. The community is home for about 325 residents who relocated from 34 states and the District of Columbia. Kendal at Oberlin has more than 80 active resident committees that shape the resident lifestyle.

Kendal at Home

Kendal at Home is an innovative program focusing on health and wellness that allows active adults to stay in their homes. While its staff operates from an office in Westlake, Ohio, Kendal at Home itself is not a place; it’s a continuing care community without walls.

Kendal at Home’s comprehensive continuing care services are delivered based on a mutually developed plan between members and their Care Coordination team. Your team serves as your advocate and liaison in executing your plan while you retain the ultimate decision making power.

Kendal at Home members keep in touch with one another through a variety of events and initiatives, including the yearlong Healthy Aging Initiative

Senior Independence

Senior Independence is a Medicare-certified provider of quality home health and home care services that extend and enhance the overall independence and wellbeing of older adults in their homes. Senior Independence offers Medicare approved intermittent home health services, including physical, occupational, and speech therapies, to residents of Lorain and western Cuyahoga counties.

As part of Kendal Northern Ohio, Senior Independence and its caregivers help create a personalized plan for daily living assistance. This can involve everything from home health care under a physician’s direction to home care services, such as assistance with bathing and meal preparation. With Senior Independence, adults receive the help they require and the confidence they need to stay in the comfort of their own homes.
